There are a lot of social norms and stigma around asking people to Homecoming. The societal norm is for the guy to ask the girl in a grand way. Here’s what CHS students had to say about girls asking boys to adance.
Both girls and boys interviewed said they had never experienced a girl who had asked a guy to a school dance. Lexi Lutton, Senior, said, “Society has made it so it’s only acceptable if a male were to ask a female out, and so I have not ever asked a guy.”
There are usually lots of nerves surrounding asking people to school dances, for both boys and girls. Adrian Fernandez a junior said “I feel like the traditional way puts too much pressure on a guy since, at least for me, it’s hard to get the courage to talk to a girl, let alone ask one out.”
Kamren Meloy had a different view on the untraditional idea of girls asking guys to dances. He believes the traditional way shows chivalry and that, “If you like somebody, you should ask them out. And if they say no, they say no.”
Both girls interviewed said that they believe there would be judgment from peers if they chose to ask a boy to the dance. Kaylee Marron, a freshman student at Cashmere said, “I think some of them [my friends] would judge me, but some of them wouldn’t.”
Lexi, who has a more of a carefree attitude about it, says, “I feel others would judge [me] for asking a guy, but again people judge everyone for everything.”
All interviewees were asked if they thought having a Sadie Hawkings dance would be fun. A Sadie Hawkings dance is where the girl asks guys to go to the dance. These dances are also known as Tolo and/or Morp.
Lexi said “I think having a girls ask guy [dance] would be an amazing thing. It would abolish the idea that only guys can ask girls to dances, and would force the ‘gender roles’ out of it.”
Adrian thought it would be nice and that most guys would appreciate it because they wouldn’t have the pressure of asking a girl. Overall, the idea of a Sadie Hawkings dance was well received by everyone interviewed
Clubs and leadership at Cashmere High School should host a Sadie Hawkings type dance. Even though most people are happy with the traditional norm of guys asking girls, a Sadie Hawkings dance would switch it up and allow for change within the school.
