Every teenager is excited for the day they can drive, but the first step to driving is joining Drivers Ed classes. CHS offers Drivers Ed every season every school year. This gives an opportunity for students who are 15 and a half or older to join. The overall cost to be able to join this class is $410. Students learn the rules for the road and go through drives to get a hang of the wheel before getting into the real deal. They learn the safety and rules of the road, along with how to park and how to manage being behind the wheel.
We talked to 2 students who had finished Drivers Ed, Yadiriah Solis and Litzy Heredia. This was their experience when joining the class.
Some students were nervous to join the class like Yaridiah Solis, “I was nervous about the driving instructors, they made me feel more nervous because I thought I was gonna mess up,” she said.
Yadiriah gave advice to students who want to join in the future. “Know how to drive before you drive. At least practice a couple of times.”
Litzy stated, “Drivers Ed is easy, just pay attention. But I also hated waking up so early for that class.”
Mia Lopez is a student who is in this year’s Drivers ED fall class. “Drivers Ed is making me improve my driving,” she said. Advice Mia has given to future drivers ed students is, “Make sure you wake up early and don’t be late to class.”
We talked to Drivers Ed teacher Mr Sykes who has been teaching drivers ed for almost 32 years. Sykes assured that the driving tests weren’t hard. “The more people practice, the easier the tests are. Our final test is a little harder than the state test,” he said. His biggest advice would be to “pay attention, no phones and keep your seat belt on no matter what,” as a lot of people don’t pay attention on the road causing crashes. Driving is a privilege, and Drivers Ed is the way to get there.
