As Hispanic Heritage Month begins, Cashmere High School is preparing to celebrate the diverse cultures, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latin communities. Student leaders, teachers, and clubs are working together to plan activities and events throughout the month to honor heritage, educate students, and bring the school together in celebration.
During an interview with Maestro Theiss, the Spanish teacher, he was asked how they plan to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in his classes. He explained that “…after meeting on Tuesday, they are working on coming up with ideas.” They are working with the Equity Club to find a way to get students more involved and add more fun activities for this month. President Avril Guerrero also says, “We plan on holding an arts and crafts night/ game night next Thursday, open to club members, and other students wanting to join us and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a fun event!” She also discussed two of the other activities they plan to carry out next week: a Hispanic-themed spirit week and Hispanic culture trivia questions during the week. She believes that these activities will give a chance for the school’s Hispanic students to wear their colors and pride to school.
When asked why it is important for students to learn about Hispanic culture and heritage, Theiss explained that it comes down to the community we live in. Because such a large percentage of the valley is rooted in Hispanic and Latino culture, he said it would be “…naive to ignore it and not embrace it.” By celebrating and learning about Hispanic culture, students gain a better understanding and perspective of the people, traditions, and history that shape the environment around them.
