Senior Hazel Schade is making her senior project come to life on Saturday, October 18th, during the volleyball match against Eastmont. Schade is a starter as a middle for the CHS varsity volleyball team, where she blows people away with her blocks, kills, and ability to wow the crowd. For her senior project this year, Schade is raising money for a breast cancer foundation during the volleyball team’s Dig Pink event, a volleyball game aimed at raising money and awareness for breast cancer.
Schade explains more about this event. “I’m working with the Side Out foundation, which is a foundation that was put together by this guy whose mom had breast cancer and uses volleyball as a way to win money and get support for it. I’m an ambassador for the program, and I am helping put on the Dig Pink event, which is the main event that will draw people’s attention to it.”
Participants and spectators are encouraged to wear pink for this pink-themed event. This is the first year this match has been made a fundraiser. In past years, it has been a game to raise awareness for breast cancer, but no one has taken that extra step to raise money except for Schade. There are many different ways Schade is preparing for this event.
“We are going to run a bake sale, baked goods are provided by the team, we are all making them together. The bake sale is kinda the main thing, it’s going to be the first volleyball game that cheerleaders are going to be at, so they’ll be cheering. Between the first and second set, they’ll be doing a dance, they’ll have pink pom-poms. I think it will be the first time volleyball has had cheerleaders at a game. Eastmont is also involved in it. They are also making baked goods, so we are involving both communities.”
When asked how she got into this project, this is what she said. “Coach Broadbent talked to me about it because a lady reached out while we were at WSU about if we wanted to run a pink game. We normally run a pink game every year, but she just came to us asking if we actually wanted to raise money for it, and so [Coach] B talked to me and asked if I wanted to do it for my senior project, and I thought, might as well.”
This project is helping Schade prepare for her future in life after high school.
“I’m interested in marketing, I’ve always liked marketing stuff. I like making posters and advertisements. I’m going to do medical sales, so if I do this now, I feel like this project ties into that.”
Schade is hoping for lots of involvement in this game, supporting the cause and raising awareness for breast cancer. She thinks a lot of people in the community and students have some sort of connection to this fundraiser, hoping a lot of students will come for that particular reason.
The pink out game will be on Saturday, October 18th, at 1:00. Come support your volleyball team and this great cause!
