Rod Robertson is a known, well loved teacher who has been teaching for the past 38 years. He started teaching in 1988. He is known for his patience, mellow demeanor, and kind way of teaching. He has taught many students and many generations. Mr Robertson teaches 8th grade ELA, History, yearbook, and journalism at CMS, and on most days he also teaches Driver’s Ed with his wife.
Junior Haile James at Cashmere High School said, “I liked Mr. Robertson because he was always so understanding. He had similarities with everyone so he was able to bond with anybody.”
Junior Brynne Patrick shared, “I liked how he would get to know us and how we were able to watch movies after we read the book. That’s also what made him different from other teachers. He was funny and most of us had his wife as a preschool teacher.”
Mr Robertson is a very positive man who loves his job. He found no dislikes over those 38 years of teaching. He has found many likes, though. “I like writing with kids, I enjoy telling stories, too, and maybe I do that too much in class, but I can’t help it. No dislikes, actually.”
I asked Mr Robertson the question, “If you could change teaching subjects, what would it be?”
He answered with, “I have a math major, but I prefer and love reading and writing.”
Mr Robertson’s favorite moments were always the first days of school because he never knew who he would get in his classes. Even though he would get nervous on those first days, he always loved building cool and meaningful relationships with his students.
He does love teaching, but he also loves summer break, where he can hang out and go on a road trip with his wife and kids. Even though he isn’t in school during summer break, he still loves to open a document and write whatever comes to mind.
After 38 years of teaching, Mr Robertson does think about retirement from time to time. He plans on staying in the valley and taking care of his family and parents, and would love to go to the ocean every few months.
Mr. Robertson also has some achievements. He is very proud of, like becoming the head middle school football coach for almost three years at this time. He is very proud of how comfortable he has gotten with students.
After 38 years of teaching and maybe more to come, Mr Robertson has built trust and respect from many students, parents, and staff members, and it will be a sad moment when he retires.
