Mr. Ream is the new choir teacher at CHS. This is his first year at CHS and his 8th year teaching choir. He has also taught band, drama, and math.
Mr. Ream’s favorite song to work on with the choir was “Bright Morning Stars”. He said, “I just loved how the harmonies blended together and with it being acapella, I felt like the students really stepped up and sang out.”
The students favorite song was “Yonder Come Day”. Mr Ream said, “It’s energetic with harmonies that build on each other so they felt really successful singing it.”
Mr. Ream actually never imagined himself becoming a choir teacher. He went to college for mechanical engineering before switching to music education after three years.
He was inspired by Mr. Chalmers when he was in high school and wanted to become a band teacher just like him. Ream said, “The percussion professor at the University of Idaho was also the jazz choir director, so I found myself in a lot of his choirs and one thing led to another and now I’m here.”
Mr Ream’s favorite music to teach is jazz. “I LOVE teaching jazz. With it being one of the newer genres of music, I feel like it is still evolving and has so much more to be learned about,” he said, showing his appreciation for the music.
Mr Ream also said there are so many “non-music skills that get taught in choir. You get to learn self discipline, practice a skill, analyze performance, personal responsibility, communication and collaboration.” Mr. Ream also said, “Basically all of the soft skills that are learned in any team based setting can also be learned in a musical ensemble.”
