At CHS there are many options for internships. Students can choose from their interests, such as working at Vale Elementary School as assistants or helping out at hotels and That Pizza Place. There are many other options. Internships give students an opportunity to learn new skills, learn how to be an employee, and learn the responsibilities of having a job.
Haile James is one out of many students choosing to intern, and hers is at the Tamarack Tax & Consulting LLC.
Haile James said, “I joined it because I already knew Mrs. Jacobson. She’s a family friend, and it was something fun to try. It’s accounting and I just scan papers, so that’s fun.”
Haile didn’t just start interning because she enjoys doing this.
“The best part about it is meeting new people. There’s Madison, she’s the front desk person, and she’s really nice. I also met Tyler Kert. He’s also really nice,” she said.
She didn’t expect that meeting new people while working in the Tamarack Tax building would be so fun.
James also said, “The hardest part about this internship is following the dress code. You have to wear game day dress throughout the whole week, but on Fridays you can wear jeans.”
James continues to say, “A disadvantage about this is you’re away from school. So then when you show up for your 10 minute break, you technically don’t have one. So you have to be here on time and if you’re late from your internship, you’re still late. The school doesn’t care.”
Being away from school can be tricky for intern students, and not just because of the schedule. They often miss the bulletin and have to catch up at advisory.
Haile states that the biggest lesson from this is she has learned how to be responsible, how to manage time, and how to get work done efficiently. She also goes on to say how this is teaching her responsibility because it’s an actual job.
Haile has learned many new skills while doing this internship. Not only has she gotten better at getting her work done efficiently, but she has been taught how to be responsible as a student and a person in general.
Haile says, “New skills I learned while doing this internship are scanning paper, but I’m still learning about the website and how it works. It’s actually pretty complicated.”
Haile continues, “The part that I like the most is that I can kind of go there on my own time after school if I want to continue working. I don’t have a certain hour.”
Haile advises students who are considering doing an internship to do it the block before lunch to prevent being late to class.
Any student interested in doing an internship should communicate with Mrs. Fall.
