After school Monday through Thursday, students who don’t finish work, miss quizzes or tests, have detention, or need a place to do homework, go to Afters. Afters is run by Mrs. Blomquist, the health and P.E teacher at CHS.
Some students take Afters as an opportunity to get caught up or get assignments done, while others go because they are assigned to attend by a teacher. Usually, students get assigned when they have 3 or more missing assignments.
Sometimes, the threat of Afters with a 24-hour notice will push and motivate kids to get their work done before they have to go because they want to leave after school. Mrs. Blomquist says, “Just yesterday, a teacher assigned 4 students to Afters. By the time it took the 48 hours of getting the whole process going, all 4 of them had their work done. It’s the threat of Afters that pushed them to get their work done.”
Which subjects are worked on most in Afters? Mrs. Blomquist says, “There’s a variety of things [that students work on]. A lot of them work on math, science, or English. There’s a lot of kids right now working on health, and occasionally art.”
Mrs. Blomquist also says, “There are at least two students who come per day working on homework, who don’t even have to be there.” This shows that Afters has a big impact on grades and motivation towards students.
