People are often so focused on popular sports, but few look beyond them.
Football, Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, and Baseball, but what about other sports?
High Schools don’t include extreme sports, such as biking, Surfing, ice skating, skiing, or snowboarding. Because these sports are so difficult, they require more time and practice.
CHS students are amazing at a variety of non-school-sponsored sports and have a wide range of cool interests and hobbies. These hobbies include dirtbiking to surfing, ice skating to skiing, but one individual takes a special interest in the water.
Corbin Burger, a sophomore student at CHS, has a big interest in wake surfing. Usually, when summertime comes around, he spends most days on his boat and surfs at any opportunity. What is wakesurfing? Wake surfing is a water sport where a rider uses a rope to be pulled by a boat until they can get up and ride the boat’s wake without the rope.
I asked Corbin how his journey started. This is what he said: “I surf because it’s fun. I got into surfing in 2022 and really started to push myself, and in the summer of 2024. I go in the evenings after my parents are off work or on the weekend.”
The quality of equipment wakesurfers use is important because Corbin goes on with what equipment he needs to surf: “ I ride a 50-inch Phase Five Key Finless surfboard,
behind a Centurion wakeboat. I also need a rope (joystick), and my life jacket (VeloVest).”
Corbin is so good at wakesurfing that he’s earned sponsorship from VeloVest and Thejoystickusa. These are businesses that offer Corbin free gear in exchange for promotion of their products. VeloVest is a life jacket, and Thejoystickusa is a surfing rope to pull Corbin through the water while he surfs. Corbin is getting noticed through his surfing posts on social media.
Burger hasn’t yet started doing competitions, but in the future, he plans to.
