TPUSA (Turning Point USA) is a nonprofit educational and political organization founded by Charlie Kirk. Their mission statement, according to their website, is “to identify, educate, train, and organize students to promote the principles of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government.” (IE, conservatism.) Their main method of accomplishing this is through their chapters in schools and colleges. CHS students Camryn Harnden, Millie Flick, and Ava Burns have started a chapter at CHS. They hope to use it to spread Charlie Kirk’s conservative messages.
At the first Cashmere TPUSA chapter meeting on Monday, October 20th, the founders gave an overview of TPUSA and what their goal is: to inspire the next generation to take action to better our incredible country. They also spoke about how they knew about TPUSA before, but after the founder and political activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated at one of his college debates, Harnden, Burns, and Flick came together and decided that they wanted to start up TPUSA at Cashmere.
A big stir about TPUSA Cashmere is that the club is sanctioned in a public high school; however, the club exercises many political and right-wing beliefs. There is nothing wrong or illegal with this; however, it seems to go against public high school norms. Some of the political beliefs that TPUSA seems to strongly follow include the following: Very supportive of the Second Amendment, which allows you the right to bear arms. Another controversial political view they hold is on Gender identity, and their belief that there should only be two genders (Male and Female). The last big political view TPUSA has a strong opinion on is Free Speech. TPUSA is a huge advocate for freedom of speech, with founder Charlie Kirk even going as far as to go to College campuses, invite college students to come debate him, and then debate and have some incredible conversations with these people for hours on end. This is a huge reason TPUSA has so many younger supporters, and that number seems to only continue to grow. This is because the next generation can relate to Charlie and TPUSA as they show how the future needs to be shaped for an incredible next generation of self-thinkers, who make decisions for the good of our country, not for a quick payday.
The girls also talked about what they want the TPUSA to do at Cashmere. They hope to raise money within the club to buy things such as pocketbook constitutions and Bibles for people who need them. Harnden said, “But then, of course, that money would also go towards buying materials for other religious beliefs too, as well.” It seems that the club is open to many people of different viewpoints.
Flick said that she believed that TPUSA’s purpose in the school is to talk about what is going on in the world. “[We want the club to] continue his [Charlie Kirk] legacy and fight for what we believe in”. Burns and Harnden had the same view as Flick. Harnden specifically said, “…encourage our own students to learn more about our government and our freedoms.”
If you are interested in TPUSA, they have meetings every Monday in Mr. Groce’s room at lunch. TPUSA is still looking for a secretary. If you are interested, contact Ava Burns or Camryn Harden.
