As many CHS students know, the school store recently, on October 20th, raised the prices of the Popcorners from $1.00 to $2.00, a 100% increase that left many students shocked and blindsided. Later that day, two brave sophomores, Alejandro Ceja and Thomas Tran, stood outside of the store at lunch, holding signs that read “Keep Popcorners One Dollar” and “Hands off Our Popcorners. Keep Popcorners 1$” respectively. This raised the attention of many other students, and word of this unjust and staggering price increase spread throughout the school.
However, a bright spot came out of all of this. On November 20th, exactly a month after the first price change and the subsequent protest, the cost of a bag of Popcorners went down to $1.50, a compromise between both sides. Is this step forward a result of the hard work and advocacy of the two courageous students that sacrificed their lunch times to stand up for what is right?
Alejandro Ceja stated that he was extremely glad that the prices were decreased. However, he is still not satisfied. Ceja said, “I’m very happy that they lowered them, but that’s not our goal. Our goal is to get them back to one dollar.” Ceja also stressed that selling Popcorners for $1.50 did not make sense because no one likes to, or does, carry coins around.
When asked if he thought that their protest had to do with the reduction, Ceja explained that while in his class, Eygabroad, the advisor of the school store, would talk about it. Ceja said, “I guess that kind of stuck in his mind. Maybe it had a play in it.”
When asked how he felt about the price reduction, Tran said, “I feel ecstatic.” As for his satisfaction with the results, Tran had a different view compared to Cejas’ demand for the old prices. Tran said, “I hope it changes more, I hope it goes back to one dollar, but I’m fine with it being $1.50
Ultimately, students can rejoice that the Popcorner’s prices have taken one more step back to the way they were before. “I’m pretty happy about the changes,” Tran said, echoing the words that have rung in every chip-lover’s head since the price drop.
